Parent Newsletter, December 2007

CHAMP members invite you to the next CHAMP/Parent Advisory meeting on Monday, January 14 (changed from January 7 to allow Buckeye fans to watch the game).  We will meet in the high school media center at

7:00 p.m.  The guest speaker will be Aaron D. Kuhn, M.S., L.P.C., L.I.C.D.C.  He is completing his doctorate degree in Psychology and is currently in practice with Dr. Crystal Oswalt, specializing in psychotherapy.

Kuhn’s topic “The Psychological Impact of Technology on Young People Today” is important to all parents of teenagers.  He will discuss:

·         the impact of technology (text messaging, cell phone calls,
instant  messaging, e-mail, chat rooms,  Facebook, etc.) on children,
especially in relation to attention skills and anxiety levels

·         cyberbullying, which is on the rise and recently contributed to the suicide
        of Megan Meier

·          ways in which text and instant messaging slang impair students’ abilities
          to write well

·           the effect that posting inappropriate information and photos online
can have on an individual’s reputation/self- esteem

·           guidelines parents can establish for safe, healthy use of technology

In addition, Guidance counselors Lynne Carmean and Wendy Gabes will talk to parents about registration and scheduling for the 2008-2009 school year.  Principal Jason Luebke will give an update about programs and activities at the high school.

At the November CHAMP meeting, Marcia Helentjaris and Kelly Jay discussed the benefits of job-shadowing. New resource materials are available in the media center to help students explore career opportunities and college majors.  Ms. Helentjaris is compiling packets of information about job-shadowing that will be available for students and parents in the near future. In addition, Celina Rotary Club is planning a day next semester for juniors to explore a variety of career choices with local professionals.  If your student would like to set up a

job-shadowing experience, please contact the Guidance department.

CHAMP plans to offer an ACT instruction seminar in February to help students prepare for the test.  Last year, the Lima Sylvan Learning Center met with students for two hours one evening in February at the high school to review strategies and test-taking tips.  In addition, Sylvan offers individual and small group instruction at the Lima office and intends to provide an ACT prep class again this spring at the Auglaize-Mercer Counties YMCA prior to the April test.  For information about Sylvan’s test prep programs, call Pam Fried, Center Director, at

419-331-7323.
