Character Counts
CHAMP and Bill Montgomery of Celina Insurance Group once again teamed up to sponsor the Character Counts awards at CHS. Each year, CHS teachers nominate students who have shown exemplary character during the school year. This year, 10 students were recognized. Each received a $50 award from Mr. Montgomery. Shown here are some of our Character Counts nominees with Mr. Montgomery (standing, at left) and Principal Jason Luebke (standing, at right).

Speckshots Funds Art Portfolio Project at CHS

Don Speck of Speckshots is teaming up with CHAMP to sponsor a new project atCelinaHigh Schoolthat will allow art students to create a digital portfolio of their work. Speck’s donation of $300 enables art teacher Lisa Brunswick to purchase digital cameras, tripods and other supplies to launch the “reflective portfolio” project at the school. Through the project, students will photograph the projects they complete in CHS art classes to create a digital record. This digital portfolio will help them and their teachers evaluate the work and see their progress from project to project, and over time. It will also create a portfolio for students who plan to continue their art education after high school.

Speck said that ever-changing technologies make it even more important to give students the tools they need to compete in today’s world, and into the future. “Teaming up with CHS is my way of giving back to area schools and communities,” he said.

“We hope this project will benefit many students now and in the future atCelinaHigh School,”Brunswicksaid, and expressed her appreciation to Speck for his sponsorship. CHAMP, Celina High Academic and Motivational Promoters, is helping to facilitate the project.

Second National, CHAMP Sponsor CHS in TEAMS

Celina High School is once again preparing for the national TEAMS competition. TEAMS, sponsored by the Technology Student Association (TSA) stands for Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science.

This year, TEAMS sponsors at CHS are Second National Bank and CHAMP (Celina High Academic and Motivational Promoters).

CHS students have done well in past TEAMS competitions. Last year’s sophomore team placed third in division five nationally in the grades 9-10 competition. Team members included Jack Hinders, Cole Mertz, Alex Schiavone, Peter Seffernick, Aaron Seibel, Alex Seibel, Blaze Weiler and Michaela Wenning.

CHS also sent teams of seniors, juniors and freshmen to last year’s competition. CHS students who participated were 2012 seniors Caleb Curtis, Ellie Elston, Justin Hoffman, Sean Mertz and Jeremy Walls; juniors Brianna Beougher, Sarah Curtis, Angie Evers, Andrew Huff, Ally Riley and Kyle Snider; and freshmen Luke Bowsher, Alli Darras, Stephen Fleck, Hannah Glass, Ashley Lochtefeld, Matt Moege, Anna Schmackers and Joel Weitz.

Last year’s teams were sponsored by CHAMP and Fanning and Howey Associates, Inc.

The TSA TEAMS competition is a one-day event held each year at over 100 locations across the nation in February or March. Local schools often compete at Ohio Northern University in Ada.

CHAMP Donates College Materials to Celina High School Media Center

The CHAMP (Celina High Academic Motivational Promoters) in Fall 2012 donated $ 250 to the Celina High School Media Center for the purpose of updating the College Collection. The organization had, years ago, stocked the College Credenza (in the media center) with a variety of books and CD’s on topics concerning: testing practice CD’s; getting into college; deciding on a college major; finding the best colleges; scholarship opportunities; financing to attend college; writing college essays; and making the most of high school so students are ready for college. Shown above left to right are: Jean Giesige, CHAMP co-president; Sheila Baltzell, media specialist at Celina; and Stephanie Temple, CHAMP vice president. They are shown holding a few of the volumes . Each has a book plate inside noting CHAMP as the donor.
