The East Elementary Library is the first library experience many of our children have.  We try to make it a fun, rewarding experience as well as educational.

At the elementary level we promote reading as enjoyable and entertaining as well as a learning tool.  Most students start with picture books which the parent/sibling can read to them.  They quickly move on to the Ready-to-Read books, which have word repetition and simple sentences.  The next step will be simple stories with longer sentences and beginning chapter books.  As they are reading proficiently, they will enjoy more challenging stories with longer chapters.  The library has a nice selection of these types of books on many subjects to meet the interest of all.

We promote responsibility by teaching our students to handle the books carefully, to keep the books in a safe place and to return books to the library on time.

Every student comes to the library once a week for 1/2 hour.  They can check out one book, which is due back in the library in one week on their next library day.  Always the same day and same time each week.  They will not be able to check another book out until that book is returned.  Lost or damaged books will need to be paid for.

Parents can help promote reading by reading to your child or having your child read to you everyday.  It is important that children realize how much we use reading in our daily life.  Encourage them to read signs, labels, directions and rules wherever you go.

The East Elementary Library sponsors two Book Fairs each year to help financially support the library.  The first is at conference time and the second is Right-to-Read Week.  The students really enjoy this experience.
