Dear Parents:
This letter is to let you know that West Elementary has been identified as in need of improvement. School Improvement - Year 1 (Delay) means that West Elementary did meet the states Math goals last year, but they did not meet this benchmark 2 and 3 years ago. The students at West Elementary School did not meet Ohio’s goals in the following area: 4th-grade mathematics (2007 and 2008 school years). Students in the economically disadvantaged and/or students with disabilities categories scored lower on tests than what we would have liked.
According to the Ohio Department of Education guidelines, your child can attend a similar school that is NOT in need of improvement and the district will provide transportation. The other option is to send you child to East Elementary. Please contact me by October 1st if you are interested in having your child switch schools and attend East Elementary. Priority will be given to those students who are lower achieving and/or come from lower income families.
Instead of moving your child to a different school, you may request free tutoring on a limited basis. You may access services through the 21st Century program. Contact Zenia Adams at 419-586-8300 ext. 3013 if you are interested. As always, we welcome your involvement in our school district.
Our local report card [http://www.ode.state.oh.us/reportcard] shows how well West Elementary School did when compared with other schools. Again, West made great gains this past year.
To help West Elementary School get out of School Improvement, we have developed a plan to help our students do better in 4th-grade mathematics.
Sincerely,
Matt Miller - Superintendent
