On November 2, all of the eighth grade teams started the grandparents project. Our goal is to make a special present for the grandparent or other special person. The teachers had "substitutes" for introducing the Grandparents project on Monday. The students really had a good laugh with the whole thing. Here are some of the comments the students had:

"It was funny."

"It was really silly!"

"They weren't very convincing, but interesting way to start the project."

"I thought it was a good idea, and really funny."

This is an interview with Mrs. Darras, the 8 Green Language Arts teacher, and Mrs. Mertz, the 8 Gold Language Arts teacher.

1. Why are we doing the project?

Darras-"It's a good essay to write. Great project to keep us connected to the older people in our lives. Sometimes we don't connect well with the older generations, and it's a good way to do so."

Mertz- "It is a fantastic way to use our language skills to communicate our appreciation, and love for others. Language is all about communication. Students always ask why do we have to know grammar skills. This project demonstrates the importance of communicating in writing language. It shows what kind of impact the written language has."

2. What is the project for and what will we learn?

Darras - "You will learn writing, grammar, etc. Also you'll learn how important family members are to each other. It will give you greater appreciation for family."

3. When the project started?

Darras - "Mrs. Mertz started after Mrs. Brenizer left."

4. Where did the project originate?

Mertz - "I began working with this project 9 years ago when I taught 7th grade. The project was given to me by Mrs. Benzie who as leaving the building. I'm not sure how many years she did it. Four years ago all grade language teachers began doing this project."
