SYLLABUS  - AMERICAN HISTORY II

AMERICAN HISTORY -  ELLINGER

I.  Every Day Material Requirements

A.     Text –  American Anthem (Holt)  (bookcover  must be on by end of first week)

B.     Notebook.  (Pref. w/ pockets to stuff homework worksheets, bonus pts., etc.)

C.     Pen (black or blue only) or pencil.  No pastel pens may be used for

tests, homework, worksheets, or anything else that may be handed in.

II. Grading – “Weighted” 9 weeks grading scale is used:

Homework            :  10 %

Class Participation:  10 %

Quizes                    :   20%

            Chapter Tests         :   60%

(80 % if there are no quizzes)

Extra Credit”      :  Not recommended since the time could be spent

more profitably studying for a test.  However, a

Research Paper under the same guidelines as the

semester project research papers (equivalent to a

chapter test when used for “extra credit”) may be

accepted.  Note that the research paper handed

in for “extra credit” could actually reduce your

         grade if not done well.

Semester Exams or Semester Projects: weighted at 20% of the entire

Semester grade by School Board policy)

A.     HOMEWORK must be completed when due.  The teacher may or may not grade or check homework.  Whenever the teacher does decide to grade or check homework it will count toward the 9-weeks grade.  (Just do it.)

B.     CLASS PARTICIPATION will be based on the following:

-         Attentiveness. Sleeping, chatting, flirting, etc., while class is in progress is

not good for your grade. Focus  on the instruction.

-         Responsiveness.  Does the student attempt to answer questions, participate in class discussion, exhibit awareness of the world around them?

C.     QUIZES (generally at the end of each week), and

CHAPTER TESTS (whenever scheduled) are based on all information arising

during the class period: Text; homework; lecture notes; media; hand-outs; class

discussion; “Awareness.”

D.     SEMESTER EXAMS or SEMESTER PROJECTS. You will have the option of doing either the semester exam or a semester project (See separate handout for

requirements.)

E.  “AWARENESS POINTS.”    At the beginning of each class there will be a brief

discussion of  what is happening in our communities (school, local, state, national,

world). Those bringing information to this discussion will be awarded bonus

points which can be applied to chapter tests or quizzes at the student’s discretion.

(not applicable to the semester exam). No credit will be given for awareness

points if you lose them. You should be able to supply the “Who?”, “What?”,

“When?”, “Where?”, “Source?” for “Awareness” submissions.

NOTE:  Weekly assignments are posted on Monday morning at the Celina High School Website:  http://www.celinaschools.org/assignments.htm
