SOCIOLOGY

I.                    MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS

A.     Text – Sociology, The Study of Human Relationships.  (Book must be covered by end of first week)

B.     Notebook  -  (Prefer w/pockets to stuff homework worksheets, bonus pts., etc.)

C.     Pen (black or blue ink only) or pencil. NO pastel pens/pencils may be used for anything that is or might be handed in.

II.                 NINE-WEEKS GRADING

*  Homework                                 :           10 %

*  Class Participation                      :           10 %

*  Tests                                          :           80 %

“Extra Credit”                     :           Not recommended, since time is better spent studying for chapter tests.  However, if you must, students can write a 7-page research paper, A.P.A. style, on a topic approved by the instructor; it will have the average equivalent of one(1) chapter test.

Semester Exam                   :           (20 % of Semester Grade by school policy)

                  (Teacher reserves the right to modify grading formula with notice)

III.               HOMEWORK must be completed when due (duh).  The teacher may or may not actually grade or check homework.  Whenever the teacher decides to grade or check homework it will count toward the 9 week grade.  It is strongly suggested that any homework/ worksheet assignment that is assigned should not be copied from another student’s work for obvious reasons:  There is a direct positive correlation between actually doing your homework and passing tests in this class.

IV.              CLASS PARTICIPATION will be based on the following:

A.     Attentiveness.  Sleeping, chatting, flirting, doing other work, etc. while class is in session will negatively affect your C.P. grade. Focus on the instruction/classroom activity.

B.     Responsiveness.  Does the student make an honest attempt to answer questions, participate in class discussion, exhibit awareness of the topic.

V.                 CHAPTER TESTS are administered at the end of each chapter or two, and study should focus first on the text, then on everything else that has occurred in the classroom (homework, lecture, discussion, awareness, media, etc.).

VI.              AWARENESS POINTS are earned at the beginning of each class during a brief discussion of what is going on in our community (national, international, state, local, school).  Those bringing information to this discussion will earn points that can be applied  to any test (except Semester Exam) at the student’s discretion during the nine weeks the points are earned  A good “awareness” item: the student knows at least the Who? , What? , When? , Where? , and Source? and possibly also the How? and Why?
