Dear Residents of Celina City Schools, During the winter months, weather always seems to impact our school and event schedules. I am often asked about the thought process that goes into making a decision in regards to a delay or cancellation. I rely heavily on assistance from Kim Sutter (Transportation Supervisor), Mike McKirnan (Business Manager), and Tim Buschur (Tri Star Director). The four of us travel the roads in our district to determine if there are concerns that would inhibit students and staff from coming to school in a safe manner. Ultimately, the superintendent is the one who makes the decision, however, due to the size of our district, it helps to have several people out covering all areas of the district. We make a decision based on current and forecasted weather conditions. Calls are then made to local radio and television outlets to get the word out as soon as possible. Another resource is www.cancellations.com, which lists our delay and closing status almost immediately, Hopefully, this information helps explain the rationale for delaying or canceling school. Celina City Schools will be placing a levy on the March 2008 ballot. This levy will replace the current 3/4 of 1% levy that has been collected over the past 5 years. With changes in the law, we are able to put this levy up as an earned income levy only. This will reduce the amount many residents will be paying, especially those on a retirement pension or social security. Since we will be asking for less money, this levy cannot be called a "renewal." It has to be listed as a "replacement" that will also show a reduction in the amount collected. The replacement and reduction levy would begin in January of 2009. More information about this levy will be shared with the community in the coming weeks. The Ohio School Facilities Commission (OSFC) is currently evaluating and assessing the status of your school buildings. The OSFC program was started 10 years ago to update school buildings in Ohio. The program ranks all school districts based on a funding list. The state will be helping to fund more schools this year than in the past due to an increase of funding through Ohio's tobacco lawsuit settlement. We are in the very early stages of this process and look forward to the commissions recommendations based on our current facilities. We will be sharing the results of the assessment, which should be available in early 2008, with the community. At that time, a collaborative community effort will begin to develop the future of our buildings and facilities. Matt Miller
