I am Mrs. Speck, and I teach Title 1 Reading and Math Intervention to second graders at Celina Primary School. I teach small groups of approximately 2-6 students at a time. This is a picture of our classroom.
Reading is a complex process. As adults, when we come to a word we don't know, we automatically use strategies to decode that word without even thinking about what we're doing. Students need to be taught reading strategies so that in time, it becomes automatic for them. In the Title 1 Reading classroom, we give ample opportunity to teach reading strategies. This is done using manipulatives, technology, and LOTS of interaction with text.
